Virtual Production: How LED Wall Filmmaking Is Changing Our Client Work

Virtual production, the technique of using massive LED walls to display real-time 3D environments behind live actors has moved from Hollywood blockbusters to commercial production. At Gamenic, we’ve begun integrating VP techniques into our client work, and the results have been transformative for both creative quality and production efficiency.

The core technology is straightforward in concept but demanding in execution. Unreal Engine renders a 3D environment in real-time, which is displayed on a curved LED wall surrounding the physical set. The camera tracks its own position and feeds that data to the engine, which adjusts the perspective of the rendered background to match creating a photorealistic, parallax-correct backdrop that responds to camera movement in real-time.

For our first VP project, we partnered with a local LED installation company to create a temporary volume for a luxury hotel brand campaign. The ability to place talent in exotic locations a Maldivian sunset, a Swiss alpine lodge, a Tokyo cityscape without leaving Kathmandu was revelatory for the client. We shot content for six different ‘locations’ in a single day.

The technical challenges are significant. LED panels need precise color calibration to avoid moire patterns on camera. The Unreal Engine environments must run at consistent frame rates matching the camera’s shutter speed. Lighting on the physical set needs to complement the virtual lighting seamlessly. Our team spent weeks preparing and testing before the first shoot day.

We see virtual production as the future of premium brand content. It combines the controllability of studio shooting with the visual richness of location work, while offering the creative flexibility to conjure any environment imaginable. As LED technology continues to improve and costs decrease, VP will become accessible to a much broader range of productions and Gamenic intends to be at the forefront of that democratization.
